Biography Langue Langue Shwayze & Cisco Adler are a classic combo. Like California and sunshine, cars and girls, music and action sports, shades and baseball caps, lifestyle and culture. With two major label albums under their belt, literally thousands of tour dates combined, a hit MTV reality series in Buzzin’ and Adler's Bananabeat, a burgeoning one-stop artist collective, which includes recording and TV production facilities, as well as divisions for Internet and street marketing, brand alliances, tour promotion, management and booking, Cisco Adlerand musical partner Shwayze are at the forefront of a burgeoning, self-created empire. Their new album, Island in the Sun is the follow-up to 2008’s self-titled debut on Suretone/Interscope (including the summertime anthems, “Buzzin’” and “Corona and Lime”) and 2009’s edgy, experimental electro-rock release Let It Beat (spawning the club banger, “Gut U Home” and “Livin’ It Up” along with cameos from Snoop Dogg, The Cars’ Ric Ocasek and The Knux). The duo have now adopted the name Shwayze & Cisco to better express the collaboration between the two, which began a little more than three years ago, when the artist formerly known as Aaron Smith jumped on-stage with Adler during a Whitestar show and began free-styling. “We’ve both grown from then,” says Cisco, who's been producing and writing for a bevy of acts and recently started a new band Cisco Adler &The Pigeons, while Shwayze put out mixtape tracks under his given name and founded Feel Good Music. “We were really just two Dudes in a Malibu studio having fun and making music as a soundtrack. We didn’t even realize we were a duo when we first started.” “The core of this record was just Cisco and I jamming together,” confirms Shwayze. “The little break we took from each other made us each stronger in our individual skills. I think we’re back to where we were when we started, before we even had a record deal. It’s a true representation of what it really is.” The album includes the title track and “Butterflies,” two songs first previewed on The W’s free mixtape releases earlier this year. “At this point in our career, we are over the bulls***,” insists Cisco. “It’s about writing good songs and playing them well.” Indeed, Island in the Sun is a tribute to the life of deceptive leisure the pair is known for, even if it does belie their non-stop work ethic over the past three years, building their brand and creating some memorable music in the process. “The point was to make a more musical album, to write better songs, to sing better, to be the best rapper,” explains Adler. “Just to be the fucking best at what we do. There are some songs here that don’t fit a traditional hip-hop setting. They’re more organic, they come from sitting around jamming and riffing.” “It’s a continuing development,” nods Shwayze. “I think we learned how to simplify things. This record is really exciting, really fun. No label execs, no pressure, just an incredible fan base that’s been with us since day one.” Going indie for the first time suits the pair and the music. “We were a small fish in a big pond,” says Shwayze about the major label experience. “You work so hard to make the album, you want the record company to hold up its end of the bargain, and sometimes it’s frustrating. Now that we’re doing this ourselves, it’s so much more of a passion project. We’re doing everything ourselves and it feels really good.” “We want everyone to know 2011 is the summer of Shwayze & Cisco,” proclaims Adler. “We rekindled our magic as a duo.” Using the power of social media, and complementary brand partnerships with the likes of Oakley (Bananabeat Frogskins), New Era (Bananabeat hats), Neivz (rings) and Winner’s Circle (apparel), Cisco has harnessed the power of music and turned it into a lifestyle and culture, much as his father Lou Adler did back in the ‘60s with Monterey Pop, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Cheech & Chong. “It was the wild west back then and it’s become the wild west again,” acknowledges Cisco. “I’m just thankful to him for giving it to me and letting it run through my blood. I just want to do it right. I want to make my own legacy. It’s a whole new game, even if there are parallels. If we empower our fans, they’ll forever return that debt to us. Why not take the really active ones and make them our soldiers. We’ve got millions of impressions, so we have to connect the dots.” In the end, though, it all starts with the music, and on Island in the Sun, Shwayze & Cisco have made their best—and most contemporary—album to date. “There’s a lot of studio gangster shit going on, a lot of robotic, tweakable dance records that people can’t even perform live,” says Adler about the new album. “To me, it’s important and time for music to become more organic, more real.” Island in the Sun offers just that… two friends doing what they do best.
