A native of Queens, New York, DJ Envy a 2-time Just-O-Mixtape award recipient was tutored by neighborhood aquintance DJ Clue,[2] who introduced him to the mixtape circuit in the mid-90's. He quickly climbed up the ranks, by the early 2000's he was peddling the latest freestyles and exclusives for big-name rappers like Jay-Z, 50 Cent and The L.O.X.. In 2003, he released his commercial debut album entitled The Desert Storm Mixtape: Blok Party, Vol. 1. Envy's big break on the radio came when he mixed once a month for Hot 97's show called "Takin' it to the Streets", hosted by Angie Martinez from 12 a.m.-4 a.m., but later filled in when Angie Martinez got pregnant.[3] He currently co-hosts Hot 97's # 1 morning show with Miss Jones from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. daily and also spins on his own mixshow on Hot 97 called "The People's Choice" on the weekends. He also currently hosts Hip-Hop Nation's afternoon show on Sirius Satellite Radio from 12 p.m.-6 p.m. daily. Envy has made appearances on various television shows like 106 & Park, Entourage and Tha Corner, which he hosts on the Music Choice channel. He was featured in the 2006 film Blood of a Champion, credited as Shadow's enemy friend. He currently released an album entitled The Co-op with rapper Red Cafe on October 9, 2007. DJ Star, whose real name is Troi Torain, previously worked at Hot 97 before switching to rival hip hop station Power 105.1 and had a running on-air feud with DJ Envy, who is from Hot 97. In a May 3, 2006 broadcast, Torain mentioned DJ Envy's wife and two children and threatened to find and sexually abuse Casey's 4-year old daughter. Torain said he would pay $500 to any listener who told him where the girl attended school. Torain, who is black, also used racial and sexual epithets about DJ Envy's wife, Gia Casey, who is part Asian. After protests by the New York City Council, detectives from the New York City Police Department's Hate Crimes Unit charged Torain with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, and required him to surrender his target pistol license and 9-millimeter handgun.
